What is the Pittsburgh Dance Calendar?

This is my attempt to keep track of a lot of the social ballroom and related dances in Pittsburgh. I like showing up to dances and seeing as many friends as possible. One of the community members used to send out an email list which was very helpful, but it could only be updated once a month–I designed this project to be instantly up-to-date at any time. I’ve been running it since 2015 in its current form but used a different platform before that.

How do you decide what to list?

I list events in broad categories of ballroom dancing, swing dancing, and latin dancing. Events must be primarily social dancing (not primarily classes) and occur within one driving hour of downtown Pittsburgh. Venues must have a dance floor or allocated space for dancing. People must be reasonably able to drop into your event and dance without a lot of other requirements. I do try to list everything and encourage organizers to keep me updated on their events.

Where can I go to learn more steps?

Many of the dances listed have a lesson beforehand. Please check the event’s website or Facebook page for more specifics month-by-month. I’ve also listed many Pittsburgh-area dance studios who offer classes; check those out here.

The calendar thinks I’m a robot! What’s going on?

You’re not the only one! Sorry about the inconvenience. Try loading the page in another browser. In Safari, it may be due to your browser settings [blocking iFrames from a different domain]; try opening the Preferences/Privacy menu and unchecking “Prevent cross-site tracking.” If things still aren’t working, drop me a line and we’ll troubleshoot.

How up-to-date are the events listed on the calendar?

I try to post events or changes to existing events as soon as I hear about them. If I hear about them second-hand, I reach back to the event organizers if possible for the most accurate information.

I originally designed this project as an updating webpage, and if you use it that way, you will get the most updated version of all events (reload the page to make absolutely sure.) However, if you subscribe to the calendar, Google may push changes to your device(s) up to 48 hours later. Please check the sync settings for all your subscribed Google calendars here: calendar.google.com/calendar/u/0/syncselect. When you subscribe to a calendar, sometimes its syncing is turned off by default.
